Not easy!

‘Look at that!’ Talouta’s finger is pointing outside to the women passing by in the pouring rain. It’s raining cats and dogs, neither one of us, nor any of the other people around, is even considering to leave our shelter soon and those women are walking the streets. Their clothes are soaked and the loads they are carrying on their heads will have become even more heavy as a result of the rain. They are on their way to the market, it being Monday.

‘They may come from a nearby village and have walked a long way to sell their produce. In a few hours they’ll be walking back home, with another heavy load of groceries. And when they get there they’ll be taking care of the children and will soon have to start preparing for cooking a meal. And by the end of the day, when they are exhausted and deserve a good night’s rest their husbands might not leave them in peace…’

He is staring out of the window (a hole in the wall) for a while, aversion on his face, as I could hear in his voice before.
‘Life is not easy for those women, Monique, not easy at all!’

I can only agree with him.
And feel grateful for a Malian man actually noticing it and not taking it for granted.
