When the Universe takes on a job, all your needs have already been taken care of!
Realizing that I was going to spend lots of time in Mali in the near future, I decided that I’d really like to have a home in laidback Ségou at the Niger river. My guide, good friend and help and stay Ibrahim started the search for it and just before my arrival in Mali he let me know that he’d found me a small villa at the riverside. Not having a clue what I was actually renting, I went for it, trusting that it would be okay.
Without too many expectations, after all it is Mali and people here do not tend to pay too much money and attention to their houses, I went for the first visit and was just blown away. My ‘small villa’ turned out to be quite large and situated in a lovely garden. The area around the house is all that I could possibly wish for: Malian daily life in all its simplicity and purity, a wonderful atmosphere and lovely people. Add all that comes with life at the riverside and bright starry heavens at night and there it is: my riverside paradise!
It didn’t take me too long (about 10 minutes…) to realize that house and garden come with more work than I could possibly handle myself. I would really need some extra hands! A good friend, Amadou, tired of not being paid by his boss, had quit his job just before my return. When I asked him if he’d be interested in the job of guardien and the housing that comes with the job, he just started beaming. Without knowing at that time of the significance of ‘all that comes to you on a Friday’, I had offered him the job on a Friday.
And I do fully agree: what comes to you on a Friday is a blessing!
